Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville pick their teams of the season…with one big name missing out

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have picked their Premier League teams of the season, with a few surprise selections in both.

The Sky Sports Monday Night football pundits rounded off another compelling season of analysis with their end of season conclusions, as their annual teams of the season served up plenty of talking points.

Former Liverpool star Carragher opted for a back three to mirror the formation Chelsea used to win the Premier League title, with eight of his team selected from the newly crowned champions and their nearest challengers Tottenham.

“I’ve gone for a back three,” said Carragher. “We’ve spoken about the season Cesar Azpilicueta and David Luiz have had and one of the Tottenham centre-backs had to be in it. It was a toss-up and I just went for Toby Alderweireld over Jan Vertonghen.

“I’ve gone for more of a diamond midfield than in the graphic above. N’Golo Kante is holding – he’s been the best central midfield player.

“I’ve got David Silva tucked in on the left, where he has been playing for Man City and has been a revelation.

“How many goals has Christian Eriksen created from the inside right channel? I think of the goal he created against Chelsea and the goal he set up in the FA Cup semi-final for Harry Kane.

“I’d have Dele Alli behind the front three, who has been one of the players of the season. He has been outstanding.”

Carragher also suggested Manchester United would be wise to do all they can to keep goalkeeper David De Gea, as he offered up this glowing tribute to the Spaniard who is widely expected to move to Real Madrid this summer.

“I think David De Gea is possibly the best goalkeeper in the world,” added Carragher. “It’s close between him and Manuel Neuer, but I would probably go for De Gea.”

Neville controversially picked Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino as his Manager of the Year ahead of Chelsea’s Antonio Conte, as his team featured a more conventional 4-4-2 line-up that found a spot for Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne in his midfield.

However, there was no space for Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, despite his sparkling debut season that produced 28 goals.
