Xi Jinping Elected New Head of China’s Communist Party

Xi Jinping has been elected the new secretary general of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), succeeding Hu Jintao on the post, the Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday.

A new Politburo Standing Committee was also unveiled at the first plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee on Thursday morning.

Other members of the newly elected Standing Committee are Li Keqiang, Zhang Dejiang, Yu Zhengsheng, Liu Yunshan, Wang Qishan, and Zhang Gaoli, Xinhua said.
