Iran hosts meeting between Syria govt., opposition on Sunday: Salehi

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says a one-day meeting between the Syrian government and opposition groups will be held on Sunday in the Iranian capital Tehran.

Salehi told IRIB on Saturday that nearly 200 participants would attend the meeting that will focus on national dialog in Syria.

“We hope that the meeting will be a prelude to an inclusive national dialog among various Syrian groups, including the opposition and the government,” he said.

The foreign minister said that the gathering will bring together Syrian scholars, tribal and religious leaders, representatives of different ethnicities, minorities and the opposition.

According to Salehi, Syrian Minister of National Reconciliation Ali Haidar will attend the meeting as the representative of the Syrian government.

The Iranian official also added that representatives from Brazil and some other states seeking to help resolve the crisis in Syria along with foreign ambassadors to Tehran have also been invited to the meeting.
Syria has been experiencing a deadly unrest since March 2011 and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the turmoil.

Iran has repeatedly voiced its opposition against any foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs, calling for inclusive dialog and national reconciliation as well as free elections as the key to the settlement of the crisis in the country.
