Lyon is lit up. The city in the south east of France is commemorating the day in the 1800s it was saved from the plague.

History records the Virgin Mary asked the citizens to leave a lighted candle in their windows. The people obeyed and survived.

A huge festival of light has now grown up around the date lasting four days. Around three million visitors come to Lyon to see a wide variety of impressive light shows projected on to buildings and on water.
