Syria talks confirm no military solution to conflict

UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said here on Friday that he agreed with U.S. and Russian envoys that there was no military solution to the Syria conflict.

Brahimi made the remarks after a close-door meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.

“We underscored the necessity to reach a political solution based on the Geneva Communique of the 30th of June 2012,” Brahimi said at a press briefing after the conclusion of the second trilateral meeting.

The three stressed the need for a speedy end to all forms of violence in Syria.

Brahimi said he would continue to engage all Syrian parties as well as other regional and international stakeholders.

The last talk of the three envoys was held on December 9, 2012, when they agreed that a political process to end the crisis in Syria was necessary and possible.

According to UN figures, more than 600,000 Syrians have fled the country to seek protection in surrounding states and over 60,000 Syrians died since the conflict began.
