President-elect Rohani pledges to enhance Iran ties with Lebanon

Iranian president-elect Hassan Rohani has stressed the need for further development of bilateral relations between Iran and Lebanon, noting that diplomatic ties between Tehran and Beirut will expand in coming years.
The remarks were part of message conveyed by Iran’s Ambassador to Beirut Ghazanfar Roknabadi to Lebanese President Michel Sleiman during a meeting at Baabda Presidential Palace on Thursday.

In the message, the Iranian president-elect also expressed gratitude for Sleiman’s congratulatory message on Rohani’s recent election to Iran’s presidency.

During the meeting, Roknabadi reiterated Iran’s policy to support the unity and stability of Lebanon, and maintain balanced relations with all Lebanese tribes and political factions.

He stated that Tehran throws its weight behind Sleiman’s efforts to promote national dialogue in Lebanon.

The Iranian ambassador also expressed hope that Iran-Lebanon ties, particularly in line with economic and trade agreements signed between the two countries, will further expand under the next Iranian administration.

Sleiman, for his part, stated that the region has entered a new stage following Rohani’s presidential election win. He expressed hope that the new opportunity will open fresh avenues for the realization of the interests of the regional nations.

Rohani won over half of the votes in Iran’s June 14 election, which was marked by a 72.7 percent turnout, to secure an outright victory.

Rohani currently represents Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in the Supreme National Security Council and is also a member of the Expediency Council and the Assembly of Experts. He is also the president of the Expediency Council’s Center for Strategic Research.
