The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in an interview with the REFORMA Mexican newspaper that he was not going to send peacekeepers to Ukraine. He said he didn’t think it was acceptable to send troops right now, adding that he couldn’t act without a clear-cut mandate and authorization of the UN Security Council.
He also pointed out that Russia is a Security Council member-state and has the right to veto Council decisions.
But Ban Ki-moon said he fully shared Ukraine’s position that territorial integrity and sovereignty should be protected and not violated.
Ukraine’s acting president Alexander Turchinov earlier asked for a peacekeeping force to be sent to the east of Ukraine.
