Tom Hanks’ wife Rita Wilson speaks out about his diabetes diagnosis for the first time

TOM HANKS’ wife Rita Wilson has spoken candidly for the first time about the drastic changes the actor had to make to his unhealthy lifestyle following his shock diabetes diagnosis last year.

Rita, 57, says the star, who previously revealed he was suffering from Type 2 diabetes – a lifelong condition in which the body fails to produce enough insulin – felt he had been served with a wake-up call.

She adds that Tom then embarked on a rigorous weight-loss regime and diet overhaul, which has made him “healthier than ever”.

“He’s dropped weight, he exercises every day, he’s eating properly and thank God doing really well,” says Rita, who has been married to the two-time Oscar winner for nearly 30 years.

“When you get a diagnosis like that you can’t mess around so he’s probably healthier than he’s ever been now.”

The Forrest Gump actor, also 57, who has reportedly shed more than a stone and cut fatty foods from his diet, had initially admitted that he would struggle to follow doctors’ orders to slim down to help control the symptoms of his disease and had even voiced fears he would struggle with such a life change in his late 50s.

“My doctor said, ‘If you can weigh what you weighed in high school you’ll essentially be completely healthy and not have Type 2 diabetes.’ And I said, ‘Well, I’m going to have Type 2 diabetes then,’” he joked at the time.
