The Ukrainian crisis was triggered by the US, Speaker of the Russian State Duma Sergey Naryshkin said, speaking at the Balkan forum in Belgrade. In his opinion, this is proved by Washington’s actions. Naryshkin reminded the audience that the US defended the armed activists in Maidan Square and now it openly supports violence against civilians in the eastern Ukraine.
As Sergey Naryshkin told journalists, the US’ recent claims about state monopoly to violence toward civilians give away the organisers of the Ukrainian crisis lock, stock and barrel. At the beginning, they did everything to prevent the use of force against the armed radicals in Maidan Square and then they assisted the new Kiev authorities, whom Ukrainians themselves call a ‘junta’, in ousting the legitimate president of the country. Several experts believe that in this way Washington keeps up its attempts to trigger an armed crisis in Europe, which to a certain extent proves the US’ involvement in strong-arm operations in the eastern Ukraine. Some analysts suppose that with these actions the US is trying to provide a military- industrial impetus to its economy. However, in the opinion of military observer of the Russian portal Lenta.ru Ilya Kramnik, Washington’s actions are rather meant to make political profits.
They can make hay with orders, strengthen their geopolitical influence because those who promoted a union with Russia will lose face and, on the contrary, those who insisted on building a sanitary cordon will gain weight, and they are mostly US clients. They are interested in this, not the US as a country but certain circles that want to continue the policy of US domineering in Europe.
At the same time, some competent western media and politicians condemn the policy of the Kiev authorities in the eastern Ukraine and criticize the US’ and the EU’s attitude to it. As Professor Valery Solovey from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations told The Voice of Russia, the majority just choose to ignore what is going on in the Ukraine.
If we speak about the European public opinion it is not totally anti-Russian. The situation is more complicated than what western politicians are trying to come up with. Europeans are closing their eyes for a very simple reason. They do not have enough resources or courage to interfere in the Ukrainian events. The US has a priority here and it takes advantage of the situation to demonstrate that military power means a lot in the present-day world, especially in critical situations.
At the same time, Europeans do not realize that they are laying a bomb in their own basement with their gutless and one-dimensional position on the Ukrainian crisis. If the situation in the eastern Ukraine continues aggravating, in the end the conflict will split the country both politically and geographically. In that situation, it will be Europe and not Russia or the US that will have to solve the problems of thousands of hungry, jobless and disconcerted residents of western Ukrainian regions.
