A MAN cut off his own feet with the jagged edge of broken tea cups after he was unable to receive surgery for a condition that left him in agony.

Liu Dunhe was found in a pool of his own blood after he had smashed the pieces of porcelain to sever both of the limbs.

The 44-year-old was suffering from an ailment that stopped blood circulation to his feet and caused permanent infections.

He was only able to walk a few yards before collapsing due to the incredible pain and a neighbour said his feet had become “black and smelly”.Mr Dunhe, who lives in China’s Dingyuan County, resorted to the extreme measures as he was unable to afford surgery.

His parents died of the same condition 20 years ago and, in addition to a speech impediment, Mr Dunhe was left living in poverty.

Despite living on handouts from kind-hearted neighbours Mr Dunhe was unable to qualify for any government-funded medical benefits.

According to his neighbour Meng Hueng, Mr Dunhe smashed the tea cups to cut off his own feet as the pain was driving him insane. He said: “The pain must have been astonishing. People from the community have rallied together to raise money for emergency care after Mr Dunhe was transported to a nearby clinic for surgery.

He now hopes to have prosthetic feet attached to his legs later in the year.

Struggling to speak to reporters at hospital, Mr Dunhe said: “If it works it will be great, but for now I am glad I have food and no more pain.”

“But perhaps it was less than the agony caused by the ailment.

“In any event he managed to chop off both his feet and I found him in a pool of blood the next morning. He was lucky that he had not bled to death.” People from the community have rallied together to raise money for emergency care after Mr Dunhe was transported to a nearby clinic for surgery.
