According to Russia’s new Ambassador to NATO Alexander Grushko, “judging by the energy that NATO puts into the rhetoric about the appearance of a new threat in Europe, it is trying to use to its maximum the crisis in Ukraine in order to prove its relevance in the current security environment.”

NATO uses the situation in Ukraine to revive itself and to achieve increase of expenses towards the military, said Russia’s permanent representative to NATO Alexander Grushko.

“During these days, NATO officials had spoken so many words about the importance of ensuring that the alliance “has awakened from hibernation”, and judging by the energy that NATO puts into the rhetoric about the appearance of a new threat in Europe, it is trying to use to its maximum the crisis in Ukraine in order to prove its relevance in the current security environment. The purpose of this artificially pumping rhetoric is only one – to revive the unit, to achieve an increase in appropriations for military needs. And for that they need an enemy” wrote Grushko on his page on Facebook.

Russian permanent representative recalled that NATO had previously pledged not to place nuclear weapons on the territory of new members, not to create an infrastructure for this, and not to deploy more substantial combat forces permanently.

“Now it seems that they are trying to get rid of these obligations in order to move military potential into the Baltic states, Poland, Romania, to place the US military forces. If it comes to that, we will take all necessary measures in order to support our defense,” says Grushko. After the aggravation of the situation in Ukraine, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that there has been an “unprecedented” increase in activity of the US Armed Forces and NATO in Eastern Europe at the Russian border. Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov drew attention of the head of the Chief of Staff Martin Dempsey about an increased number of aircrafts and US troops in the Baltic States and Poland as well as NATO ships in the Black Sea.
