] The Portuguese ace need just one more goal to pip Suarez to the Golden Shoe – the award given to Europe’s leading goalscorer in its domestic leagues.
The former Manchester United star has been suffering with a hamstring problem recently, and pulled out of today’s 3-1 win with an eye firmly fixed on next weekend’s Champions League clash with rivals Atletico Madrid.
It means Suarez and Ronaldo end the season tied on 31 goals.
Despite that impressive tally, neither player was in a side which won their league, with Liverpool being edged out by Manchester City, and Real falling short in La Liga.
And Kop ace Suarez says it’s great to be competiting with Europe’s elite.
“I’m proud to be competing with players of the level of Cristiano, Messi and Diego Costa”
“I’m proud to be competing with players of the level of Cristiano, Messi and Diego Costa,” he said. “What happens is you toil away to score goals and then you get bored because they do it so easily.
“It [winning the European Golden Shoe] wasn’t my objective at the beginning of the season and then you start scoring more goals, so now when Real play I say, ‘I hope Cristiano doesn’t score more goals.'”
Welsh wizard Gareth Bale was on target for Carlo Ancelotti’s men in their comprehensive victory, with Alvaro Morata netting the other two.
