Russia, Iran to continue cooperation despite international instability – Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin hopes cooperation between Russia and Iran will continue. “I believe that we shall be able to continue this work, whatever turbulence occurs in international relations and around Iran,” Putin said at a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani held on the margins of the CICA (Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia) summit.

Russia and Iran are not only neighbors but long-time reliable partners too, Putin said. “We have already carried out a number of major projects and have other opportunities as well,” the Russian leader said. Russia and Iran are bearing massive responsibility for the situation in the Caspian region, the president said.

“We have a big agenda, and I am very glad of the opportunity to meet with you,” Putin said. For his part, Rouhani said there have been changes in the region since his last meeting with Putin in Bishkek.

He said he hoped that Russian-Iranian cooperation has lowered the threat of armed conflicts in the region in the past few months. The bilateral relations have recently become warmer and more trusting, Rouhani said.

Russia is not only our neighbor but also a partner with whom the Caspian region can be made quieter and more stable, the Iranian president said. “We are determined to develop our cooperation across all areas,” he said, adding that cooperation between the two countries will be useful for all the nations in the region.
