The anti-constitutional coup staged in Ukraine and attempts to artificially impose a choice between Europe and Russia on that country have pushed Ukrainian society toward a split, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday. “The acute crisis in this neighboring country seriously troubles us. The anti-constitutional coup in Kyiv and attempts to artificially impose a choice between Europe and Russia on the Ukrainian people have pushed society toward a split and painful confrontation,” the Russian President said.

This conflict has primarily affected the civilian population of Ukraine’s southeastern regions, he said.

“Bloodshed continues in the southeast of Ukraine, a real humanitarian catastrophe is taking place there and tens of thousands of refugees have been forced to seek shelter in Russia. Journalists who are fulfilling their professional duties have been killed and deliberately persecuted. In violation of all norms and conventions, attacks have been staged on diplomats, as it happened to the Russian Embassy in Kiev and the [Russian] Consulate General in Odesa,” Putin said.

“We want the bloodshed to be brought to a full stop all over the conflict area, including and in particular along our borders,” the Russian leader said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called on Ukraine to re-embark on the path of dialogue and reconciliation and ensure a long-term ceasefire.

“The Ukrainians need to return to the path of peace, dialogue and reconciliation. What counts most today is to secure a long-term ceasefire as a necessary condition for holding in-depth talks between the Kiev authorities and representatives of the southeastern region,” Putin said on Friday.

Germany is Russia’s most important partner in enhancing peace in Ukraine – Putin

Germany is Russia’s most important partner in enhancing peace, global and regional stability, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

“We value the accumulated potential of Russian-German relations and the high level of trade and economic cooperation. Germany, one of the European Union leaders, is our most important partner in enhancing peace, global and regional security,” Putin said at a ceremony for delivering credentials.

Russia supports further development of the entire range of the diversified bilateral ties, Putin said.

In particular, Russia attaches great importance to holding cross years of the Russian and German languages and literature in 2014-2015, the president said.
