Lavrov has telephone conversation with Kerry concerning situation in Ukraine

In a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday, June 26, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed the need to extend the ceasefire in Ukraine and launch direct talks between the confronting sides, based on the results of the first consultations between Kiev and the south-eastern regions which were held in Donetsk on June 23, reports Itar-Tass. The call was initiated by Kerry, the Foreign Ministry said.

“Discussing the situation in Ukraine Lavrov stressed the necessity to extend the ceasefire and to promptly start direct negotiations between opposing sides, starting from the results of the first consultations of representatives of Kiev and the Southeast in Donetsk on June 23,” informed the Russian diplomatic service. Ceasefire was declared by president of Ukraine Petr Poroshenko on June 20. It expires on Friday, June 27. Earlier, Lavrov discussed the situation in Ukraine with German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Moscow and Berlin believe the truce in Ukraine should be extended, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. The German foreign minister has shared his impressions on his talks with the Ukrainian leadership in Kiev, where he was on a working visit on June 24.

“The necessity to extend a truce and ceasefire – in order to launch direct dialogue between the conflict parties upon the assistance of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) – was discussed during exchange of opinions on the situation development in Ukraine,” the document said, Interfax reports.

“Amid this context, the first consultations in Donetsk on June 23 between representatives of the official Ukrainian authorities and southeastern Ukraine was assessed positively,” the Foreign Ministry said.

At the same time, “the importance of continuing such meetings – to consider of entire range of issues, firstly consultations between representatives of official Ukrainian authorities and southeastern Ukraine – has been emphasized,” the statement said.

 

Steinmeier has given a high assessment to the statement of Russian President (Vladimir Putin) on the situation in Ukraine made during his official visit to Austria,” the Foreign Ministry said.
