The United Kingdom is calling for a new special representative on extremism to the United Nations, amid the Islamic State (IS) threat, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced at the meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York.

UNITED NATIONS, (RIA Novosti) – The United Kingdom is calling for a new special representative on extremism to the United Nations, amid the Islamic State (IS) threat, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced at the meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York.

“The United Kingdom is calling for a new special representative on extremism,” Cameron said adding that the IS “is not a problem restricted to just one region. It has murderous plans to expand its borders well beyond Iraq and Syria.”

Cameron stressed that withdrawing from a problem such as the IS terrorist threat will only make the situation worse and noted that 500 Britons are believed to be currently fighting for the IS.

On Wednesday, President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said that the crackdown on the IS should encompass European countries, where terrorist “plots” are being foiled.

Earlier this month, the French parliament approved a bill that aims to prevent potential terrorists from traveling abroad, in particular to Iraq and Syria.

According to French Interior Ministry, 930 French citizens have been traveling to and from Iraq and Syria recently, and many of them are suspected of being involved with the IS and other terrorist organizations.

Several thousand individuals from the United States are also believed to be fighting for the IS militant group, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which is currently operating on the territories of Syria and Iraq.

UK and US governments are trying to ban the nationals fighting for the IS and other extremist groups abroad from returning home.
