As far as diss tracks go, here’s one we can all get behind.
Latin music legends Gloria Estefan and her songwriting husband Emilio have announced they’re putting together a ‘We Are The World’ type anthem aimed squarely at US presidential nutbag Donald Trump and his recent anti-Mexican sentiments.
Best of all, they’ve recruited some of the greatest names in Latin music – and a whole bunch of my mum’s faves – to help in the cause, including Shakira, Carlos Santana, Thalia, Pepe Aguilar, Wisin and Wyclef Jean (sorry, not sure what Pitbull’s doing?). Beloved Spanish-American chef Jose Andres is also onboard the project.
The track, titled ‘We Are All Mexican’, comes weeks after Trump launched himself into headlines with a bats–t campaign speech in which he labelled America’s Mexican immigrants as “criminals, drug dealers, rapists, etc”.
“There’s a message being sent out to the world where people are giving opinions that are plain wrong. We need to lift up our pride and show the world what we’re doing,” Emilio Estefan told Billboard, noting he had known Trump for “many, many years”.
“Trump doesn’t represent anything to me,” he added. “Everyone has their opinion, and he can have whatever opinion he wants, as long as he doesn’t humiliate my people.”
The track is due out later this month.
