French delegation urged the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) to convene a meeting to address the ongoing migrant crisis, Alain Neri said Wednesday.
“We are witnessing an unprecedented, tragic events when migrants and refugees are risking their lives while trying to reach the Europe. We need to evaluate and address this urgent issue within the OSCE PA meeting in Mongolia. I would like to ask you [the OSCE PA secretariat] to hold an emergency debate on migration issue here in Mongolia,” French parliamentarian said during the opening session of the OSCE PA in Ulaanbaatar.
The three-day long OSCE PA Autumn Meeting opened earlier in the day in the Mongolian capital, bringing together nearly 200 parliamentarians lawmakers from 57 OSCE participating states.
Europe is struggling with a large-scale refugee crisis, as hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers from crisis-torn countries in Africa and the Middle East seek a safe haven in EU member states.
On Thursday, the European Parliament backed the European Commission’s proposal to relocate a total of 160,000 refugees throughout EU member states over the next two years.
More than 500,000 migrants have arrived at the European Union borers or have crossed into the bloc in 2015, according to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
The OSCE is the largest regional security organization, including participating states from across Europe, America and Asia. The organization focuses on preventing armed conflicts, resolving crisis situations, implementing post-conflict restoration and addressing current security challenges.
