Joe Gomez out for season

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is reportedly set to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The 18-year-old was forced from the field after injuring his right knee in the 80th minute of England Under-21s’ 3-0 victory against Kazakhstan on Tuesday night.

Young Lions boss Gareth Southgate moved to ease fears over the extent of Gomez’s injury after the game, but Liverpool will hold a press conference on Thursday where they are expected to confirm that the 18-year-old left-back’s season is over.

”It seems to be okay, we were a bit concerned at first but we are hopeful it’s nothing too serious,” Southgate said.

Gomez played in the Liverpool’s first five Premier League games of the season, as well as their first two Europa League encounters against Bordeaux and FC Sion – but Alberto Moreno has been preferred in recent weeks.

His absence will be a blow to new Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who is set to take charge for the first time at Tottenham in Saturday’s lunchtime Premier League encounter.

Liverpool signed Gomez from Sky Bet Championship side Charlton for £3.5million in June.

And the Addicks later took to Twitter to tell Gomez he was in their thoughts.

“Everyone at Charlton would like to wish @J_Gomez97 all the best in his recovery. #ComeBackStronger #cafc,” a post from their official account read.

Gomez’s England U21 team-mate Chuba Akpom was one of a number of players who also posted good wishes to the youngster on social media.

“gutted to hear the bad news , you’ll defo be back stronger bro , no doubt @J_Gomez97”, the on-loan Hull striker tweeted.

Former Liverpool midfielder Luis Garcia posted: “Wishing a fast recovery to @J_Gomez97. Very bad luck for the young player that started the season in great form. #YNWA”

And the teenager’s ex-Charlton colleague Johann Berg Gudmundsson added: “Gutted to hear about @J_Gomez97 injury. You will bounce back stronger mate and be the star you deserve to be #GreatPlayer”
