Theirs was a web-flung romance.
Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, who starred in two Spider-Man movies together, have split after almost four years of dating, a person close to the couple confirms to USA TODAY.
The couple has been plagued with break-up rumors over the last year, and both had competing schedules. Garfield spent five months in Taiwan shooting Martin Scorsese’s film, Silence, while Stone has been busy working on La La Land in Los Angeles with Ryan Gosling.
Garfield and Stone met on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man in 2011, he cast as Peter Parker and she as Gwen Stacy. A tornado of press commitments followed, and the two seemed to make the most of it as a couple, charming fans and late night talk show hosts while managing to keep mum about their relationship.
Paparazzi often followed the two, though Stone and Garfield tried to keep a low profile. “I understand the interest in it completely, because I’ve had it, too,” Stone told the Wall Street Journal of the speculation about their relationship. “But it’s so special to me that it never feels good to talk about, so I just continually don’t talk about it.”
The couple was last spotted together in California in August.
In a September interview with USA TODAY, Garfield, about to take off to Australia to shoot Mel Gibson’s WWII film, Hacksaw Ridge, seemed to be floundering. “I am not OK,” he said. “That feels really good to say to you. I’m really not all right. I’m in the struggle of being a person. I haven’t got anything figured out.”
