Syria: Terrorist Groups Open Fire at Russian Army Soldiers North of Aleppo

TEHRAN (FNA)- Terrorist groups struck a base of the Russian truce-monitoring soldiers along a key road to the Northern districts of Aleppo city.

The Russian soldiers came under fire while delivering a video link to the Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow from Castello Road in Aleppo on Tuesday following a first night of the nationwide ceasefire.

Informed sources said on Tuesday that Russia’s center for the reconciliation of warring sides in Syria has established an observation outpost on the Castillo road to Aleppo city to monitor the process of the ceasefire that went into effect on Monday night.

“The information on the situation of the road during the ceasefire will be received at the Humeimim base on a daily basis,” the sources said.

“Another Russian humanitarian convoy arrived on Tuesday via the Castillo road which is controlled by the Syrian government forces,” they added.

The road serves as an additional corridor for local citizens. Militants who wish to lay down arms may also leave the combat zone.

“This road is now the corridor for exit from the Eastern part of Aleppo by those gunmen who decided to stop fighting and surrender their weapons. As part of the September 9 agreement between Russia and the US on implementing the ceasefire, special attention is laid on the Castillo road,” said Sergey Kapitsyn, who is the deputy head of Russia’s reconciliation center.

“It will become a key route for delivering humanitarian cargos in Aleppo. Now works are underway here to equip the checkpoint of the Syrian Red Crescent Society through which the humanitarian cargos will travel to the Eastern and Western parts of the city,” he said.

For creating a demilitarized zone, the pro-government forces are ready to move away to a certain distance from the Castillo road under the Russian-US deal, “but simultaneously with the militant groups,” Kapitsyn said.
