Falling. It happens to the best of us, but when you are paid a hell of a lot of money to walk upright in front of the world’s media, it garners headlines and memes.
Just ask Bella Hadid, who took an almighty tumble while walking the runway for Michael Kors’ Spring/Summer 2017 New York Fashion Week show on Wednesday.
Wearing a slim-tight sequinned black dress and sky-high platform heels, the 19-year-old sister of Gigi Hadid, 21, saved herself from an embarrassing face-plant by landing on her hands first and then knees as she took a corner in the worst place on earth – right in front of the photographers’ pit.
Flashbulbs went off on all sides – media and audience alike – but at least Hadid saw the funny side, laughing as she peeled herself off the catwalk.
Meanwhile, fellow MK models Kendall Jenner and Joan Smalls managed to stay upright.
“Guys I’m a professional breakdancer now I forgot to tell you,” Hadid joked on Twitter shortly after.
She’s not the first, and she certainly won’t be the last, model to trip mid-strut, but can a nosedive affect a model’s career?
Naomi Campbell’s famous 1993 fall in 12-inch Vivienne Westwood mock-croc platforms at Paris Fashion Week made the supermodel a household name and boosted her bank balance. She told David Letterman in 1995 that it helped her land insurance and chocolate commercials.
Jennifer Lawrence’s trip on her way to accept her Best Actress award in 2013 is one of the most memorable moments of the Academy Awards; so much so, many questioned whether it was on purpose.
The picture of her elegant slump in a pale pink couture Dior ballgown on the stairs was the shot of the night, and she remains the face of the luxury brand to this day.
But not everyone can see the bright side of a fall.
“I try to realise that this person was just humiliated, but it breaks up the energy of the show. The whole thing about fashion is that it is an illusion. A fall is like someone exposing the wizard,” Kelly Cutrone, reality TV star, author and fashion show producer, told The Wall Street Journal in 2011.
If she follows in Campbell and Lawrence’s lead we reckon Hadid, most famous at the moment for being Gigi’s little sister, dating The Weeknd and wearing that jaw-dropping red dress at Cannes with no underwear, just might land on her feet, career-wise anyway.
