And he’s Happy he did.
Calvin Harris may have enough star power to secure huge collaborations with Rihanna, Ellie Goulding and Florence Welch, but most of his fans actually like it when he takes on vocal duties himself.
The Scottish DJ has taken more of a backseat on his dance anthems since 2012’s 18 Months, but after a Grammy-winning superstar gave him some encouraging advice, he’s slowly stepping up as a performer again.
“Actually, Pharrell told me something about hitting the notes,” Calvin told Zane Lowe on his Apple Music Beats 1 show.”Occasionally people try to persuade me to sing again and he was one of those people.
“He said some of the most memorable and character voices, that we have, including himself, it’s not about hitting the notes, it’s about getting the emotion and the feeling and the character across.
“Once he said that to me I started looking at myself [and] my voice differently ‘cos I was like, ‘Hmm, someone like him picked up on that’.”
So does that mean we can expect more of Calvin on vocals after his turn on latest single ‘My Way’?
“Yeah, I’m trying to work hard to do it more because also, in tandem with that there’s a lot of DJ producers and I look at myself and I think, ‘What do I have to offer that they don’t?’
“‘What can I do that they can’t?’ Because you know, we all pretty much do the same thing.”
‘My Way’ was released worldwide on Friday (September 16) and its lyrics seemingly allude to his break-up with Taylor Swift.
We’d add that it is likely to be included on his forthcoming new album, but Calvin recently revealed he might not put another collection out.
