Obama gives green light for NUKE UPGRADE to US bombers amid Second Cold War fears

BARACK Obama has given the go-ahead for US armed forces to fit digital-targeting nuclear bombs onto its air crafts as tensions mount between Washington and Russian forces.

The B-2 Sprit bomber is set to be kitted out with the deadly bombs as the Pentagon upgrades its military might.

Despite first being built in the 1980s, the B-2 bombers are set to remain an integral part of the US Air Force weaponry until the 2050s.

Major Kent Mickelson said: “It is a testament to the engineering team that here we are in 2016 and the B-2 is still able to do its job just as well today as it did in the 1980s.”

The B-2 will be able to carry next-generation nuclear bombs such as the B-61 Mod 12 and the Long Range Stand-Off (LRSO) weapon – with both upgrades combining to cost the US taxpayer more than £23million.

The digital radar on the B-2 will be enhanced, meaning aircraft will be able to drop bombs from a higher altitude.

The airlift will also be upgraded with the Defence Management System that gives pilots a prior warning of enemy air defences.

Mickelson added: “The whole key is to give us better situational awareness so we are able to make sound decisions in the cockpit about where we need to put the aircraft.”

The Pentagon has slapped down questions regarding to upgrade of its military, stating the upgrades are necessary.

US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter said: “If we don’t replace these systems, quite simply they will age even more, and become unsafe, unreliable, and ineffective.

“The fact is, most of our nuclear weapon delivery systems have already been extended decades beyond their original expected service lives.

“So it’s not a choice between replacing these platforms or keeping them… it’s really a choice between replacing them or losing them.

“That would mean losing confidence in our ability to deter, which we can’t afford in today’s volatile security environment.”

The upgrades to US forces come just days after Vladimir Putin urged Russians to “fight until the end”.

In his speech which was live-streamed on YouTube, he said: “Learn from Israel – it never lets go. They fight until the end. That’s why it exists at all. There is not other option. We have to fight. If we let things slide, we will always lose.”
