Justin Bieber has admitted he doesn’t know the lyrics to his own remix of chart-topping song Despacito.
While taking a break between sets at a concert in Stockholm, the 23-year-old pop star tried to hose down expectations that whe would sing the wildly popular track.
“I can’t do Despacito because I don’t even know it,” he said. “I don’t know the song. I can’t do it.”
Bieber then had to duck as a disgruntled fan threw a water bottle onto the stage.
In the singer’s defence, the majority of Despacito is sung in Spanish with Bieber lending his voice to the English language introduction. The original track is sung by Luis Fonsi, with the remix – released in April this year – also featuring Daddy Yankee.
Bieber is also in the middle of the European leg of his Purpose World Tour, after a short (and not very enthusiastic) stint in Australia earlier this year.
Despacito shot to the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 shortly after it was released. It has stayed in the number one spot for five consecutive weeks.
The song has performed even better among Spanish-speaking listeners, holding the number one spot on the Hot Latin Songs chart for 19 weeks in a row.
Despacito has also topped charts in Australia, as well as numerous other corners of the globe. In May, the remix helped Daddy Yankee become the most streamed artist globally on Spotify.
The song may have ushered in a new era for the 23-year-old superstar, who recently released a collaboration between himself and David Guetta called 2U.
