On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin attended his first face-to-face meeting with US President Donald Trump in Helsinki. They discussed the current state of bilateral relations along with pressing issues on the international agenda, as well as Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 US election, as well as the situation in Syria.

US President Donald Trump on Twitter wrote about his meeting with Vladimir Putin and promised great results. Trump added that the fact that he got along with Putin made his haters angry.

Donald Trump noted that in the long term his meeting with Putin could be more productive than the NATO summit, which the president attended before coming to Helsinki.

Also, Trump pointed out the role of Russia in the settlement of the North Korean issue.

Meanwhile, later in the day, the US president, when asked whether Russia is still targeting the US, said “no” and shook his head, though stressing that no president has ever been as “tough” on Russia as Trump himself has been.

The statements come after Trump encountered strong criticism from Washington’s political circles over his stance during the one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The US president doubted the US intelligence’s conclusion that Russia interfered in the 2016 US election, an allegation that Moscow has repeatedly refuted, which prompted US officials to blame Trump for missing the opportunity to accuse Russia of the alleged meddling, calling his comments “treasonous.”

The next day, however, Trump told reporters that he had not meant that, assuring that he accepts the intelligence community’s conclusions that Russian meddling did take place.
