Abe wins 3rd term as president of ruling LDP

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is applauded after winning the LDP presidential election on Thursday.

The Yomiuri ShimbunPrime Minister Shinzo Abe was reelected president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Thursday for a third consecutive term, defeating former LDP Secretary General Shigeru Ishiba.

Abe won 329 of the 405 votes from LDP lawmakers, against 73 votes for Ishiba. Abe also took 224 of the 405 rank-and-file party members’ votes, while Ishiba won 181.
