BEIRUT: Dozens of demonstrators were violently attacked by what appears to be members of the Internal Security Forces in the late hours of Tuesday night after attempting to reach former public works and transportation minister Ghazi Aridi.
Annahar correspondent Paula Naufal was present at the scene and assaulted, receiving blows to her face which required hospitalization.
Dozens of injuries were also reported and a number of cars vandalized. Windows and windshields were shattered while protestors were dragged out of their cars and beaten.
Videos obtained by Annahar show men dressed as ISF officers and wielding batons charging at the convoy and delivering the blows.
The group of demonstrators had gathered in a convoy and visited a number of former and current officials’ residences, including former Prime Ministers Fouad Sanioura, Najib Mikati and Interior Minister Raya el Hassan.
Hours later, while passing in the vicinity of Speaker Nabih Berri’s residence in Ein El Tine to make their way to Aridi’s residence in Verdun, the convoy was attacked by the group of ISF members, believed to be part of Berri’s de facto security apparatus.
Supporters of Berri have a lengthy track record of attacking peaceful demonstrators, flexing their militia like muscles to quash protests targetting the decades-old political elite, including the speaker of the house.
Last month, a group of Berri affiliates attacked demonstrators gathered in Ring before wreaking havoc to nearby residents’ properties, including cars, shops and stores.
Weeks earlier, another group descended upon Martyr’s Square and destroyed a number of installations, setting tents on fire and assaulting dozens of men and women present at the scene.
