US Congressmen Call to Honor Victims of January 20, 1990

Baku / 22.01.20 / Turan: US Rep. Steve Cohen and Congressman Robert Aderholt made statements on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy.

Steve Cohen notes that during the Soviet occupation of Baku, there were attacks on medical personnel, ambulances and even hospitals.

This act of intimidation became a warning of the Soviet regime to the national movement not only in Azerbaijan, but also in other Soviet republics.

The United States is one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Azerbaijan. Congressman notes that the United States and Azerbaijan are strategic allies and have common interests at the global and regional levels.

Cohen expresses respect for the memory of Azerbaijani citizens who sacrificed their lives for the independence of the country and encourages colleagues to honor their memory.

In turn, Robert Aderholt noted that despite this violence, the Azerbaijani people continued the struggle and declared the independence of the country on October 18, 1991.

He also called on fellow Congressmen to honor the victims of the independence of Azerbaijan, an ally and partner of the United States.
