Armenian defense minister expresses concern over stepped up provocations by Azerbaijan on borde


YEREVAN, March 13. /ARKA/. Armenian Defense Minister David Tonoyan received on Thursday evening the personal representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Ambassador Andrzej Kasprzyk, the press service of the Armenian defense department reported.

It said the minister spoke about the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani state border and on the Artsakh-Azerbaijan contact line, as well as about the frequency and nature of ceasefire violations by Azerbaijan. In particular, he expressed concern over attempts by Azerbaijan to intensify actions on certain sections of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in recent days.

Tonoyan noted that strategic developments in the region, the international economic and epidemiological situation, weather conditions and a number of other factors increase the likelihood of destabilization. In this regard, the Minister attached importance to the speedy implementation of measures to reduce tensions in the context of eliminating new provocations.
Kasprzyk expressed his readiness to make maximum efforts within the framework of his mediation mission in the direction of reducing tension. The interlocutors also discussed humanitarian issues related to citizens in captivity.

From March 1 to March 7, Azerbaijani troops violated the ceasefire about 160 times on the contact line in Nagorno-Karabakh. On March 10, Azerbaijani sniper killed a contract soldier of the Armenian Armed Forces, Private Zohrab Sianosyan, born in 1984, on Armenian border with Azerbaijani exclave Nakhichevan.
