Araik Harutyunyan sworn in as new president of Artsakh


YEREVAN, May 22. /ARKA/ The newly-elected president of the Artsakh Republic (Nagorno-Karabakh) Araik Harutyunyan officially took office at a special meeting of the Artsakh National Assembly on Thursday. The inauguration ceremony was held at the Center for Culture and Youth of Shushi

For the oath ceremony, the State Flag, the Constitution of the Republic of Artsakh and the Gospel of the 17th century were brought into the hall.

After that the newly elected Artsakh President Araik Harutyunyan took the stage and pronounced the oath.

“While assuming the presidency of the Republic of Artsakh, I swear to unconditionally comply with the Constitution, respect the rights and freedoms of citizens, ensure the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and security of the Republic of Artsakh for the glory and the welfare of the people of Artsakh,” he said.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan, the second and third presidents of the Artsakh Republic Arkady Ghukasyan and Bako Sahakyan attended the inauguration ceremony.

The head of the Artsakh diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Archbishop Pargev Martirosyan, delivered the blessing.

Araik Harutyunyan won in the second round of the presidential election held in Artsakh on April 14, garnering 88% of the vote. His rival, self-nominated Masis Mayilyan, won 12%.
