Japanese automotive giant Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey has shut down its plants in the northwestern Sakarya province until August 13 for routine annual maintenance, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.
Most workers will be taking their vacation days, while only maintenance and repair staff remain at the plant, where Toyota manufactures several of its best-selling models.
A total of 251,637 vehicles were manufactured by Toyota Turkey in 2019, with 230,659 of them exported, Anadolu said.
The company implemented remote working for its non-manufacturing employees in March, when the COVID-19 pandemic first took hold in Turkey, and in June signed a deal with Turkey’s employment bureau to hire 800 additional workers to increase production.
Toyota Turkey had halted production in August 2019 as well, also for regular maintenance.
