Turkey’s unemployment rate moved up slightly to 12.9 percent in May, the country’s statistical authority said on Monday.

The figure is up by 0.1 percentage points from the same month last year, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TürkStat) reported on its website.

The country’s labour participation rate fell to 47.6 percent in the April to June period due to restrictions in effect to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The figure was 52.9 percent a year ago and 47.2 percent a month earlier.

The number of unemployed persons in Turkey dropped to 2.4 million year-on-year in the period to 25.9 million.

Turkey’s unemployment was 12.8 percent in April, when the government imposed a three-month ban on layoffs in effort to mitigate the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last month, Parliament approved a law allowing President Tayyip Erdoğan to extend the layoff ban until July 2021.
