Azerbaijan doubles ceasefire breaches along the border with Armenia

YEREVAN, September 17. /ARKA/. After the heavy fighting on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in July, the number of ceasefire violations by Azerbaijani troops in the Tavush direction have doubled, Armenian Defense Minister David Tonoyan said on Wednesday during a government Q&A session in parliament.

He said Azerbaijani military units are carrying out fortification work, to some extent neutralizing the advantages of our positions. For this reason, they use weapons of various calibers. This situation has been going on for about two weeks. We have shown restraint, while Azerbaijan reported that one of its soldiers was wounded by us,” he said.

The minister noted that all information about the situation is provided to the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.

“We have warned several times that there are no mechanisms to reduce risks of the escalation of tensions Today,
unfortunately, we have a victim. Appropriate measures are being taken. The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry has increased the level of combat readiness,” he said.

On July 12 the Armenian military thwarted a pre-dawn Azerbaijani raid on one of its border posts in the northern Tavush province. At least 12 Azerbaijani soldiers, including a general, and five Armenian servicemen were killed in the fierce fighting before it stopped on July 16.
