Sinovac vaccine test results at odds with Turkey’s forecasting

A Chinese-made coronavirus vaccine was 78 percent effective in a late-stage Brazilian trial, Reuters reported on Thursday, jarring with the results of a Turkish study.

Brazilian researchers said last month that the vaccine’s efficacy was between 50 percent and 90 percent. Shortly after the announcement, Turkish officials said the shot was 91.25 percent effective based on an interim analysis in a smaller, companion study.

Turkey is one of the first countries to mass order CoronaVac, the vaccine developed by Chinese company Sinovac Biotech.

Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said Turkey struck a deal with Sinovac to buy 50 million doses of the vaccine and would inoculate about 9 million people in the first phase.

Turkey has received 3 million doses before Christmas but a mass vaccination drive has not yet been launched.

BioNTech CEO Uğur Şahin said his company has shipped 25,000 doses of its vaccine to Turkey. Turkish authorities have not yet publicly announced to whom the doses will be administered.
