Yerevan Municipality to buy 161 new buses

YEREVAN, February 12. /ARKA/. The Yerevan Municipality will announce a tender for the purchase of 161 large buses, Mayor Hayk Marutyan said during a meeting of the Council of Elders on Friday.

He said the buses will be arriving in smaller batches to replace the minibuses, which make the bulk of vehicles used by commuters in Yerevan. According to the mayor, the new buses with a length of 7.5-8.5 meters are produced in China

‘Chinese bus manufacturers have made significant progress and even win tenders in Europe, including tenders for electric buses, surpassing European manufacturers in quality. We have set very high parameters and can proudly say that we have received a very good price for buses of this quality,’ Marutyan said.

He noted that similar Chinese buses have been operating in Yerevan for 9 years, and so far there have been no complaints.

The mayor stressed that all the public transport in the capital will be owned by the city. “We have no plans to hand it over to the private sector,” Marutyan said.

Currently, there are 900 minibuses transporting passengers in the city. Under a new public transport scheme, there will be 845 buses and 101 trolleybuses.
