YEREVAN, May 21. /ARKA/. Putting forward conditions through the use of force or the threat of using force is a gross violation of international law, the press secretary of the Armenian Foreign Ministry Anna Naghdalyan said today in response to a question from journalists what was the position of the ministry regarding the incursion of Azerbaijani troops into the sovereign territory of Armenia earlier this month.
“Armenia will not give in to such pressure. Armenia also rejects the false agenda on the so-called “disputed territories,” which may become a dangerous precedent for justifying the use of force in other parts of the country,”she said.
Naghdalyan added that Azerbaijan, having failed to fulfill its obligations stemming from the tripartite statement of November 9, in particular, the one that calls for the return of Armenian prisoners of war and civilians held in Azerbaijan as hostages, and on other humanitarian issues, has confirmed its deliberate violation of international obligations.
According to the press secretary, the demarcation and further delimitation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan should become part of the process of a comprehensive peaceful settlement of the conflict, within the framework of which, first of all, the de-occupation of the territories of Artsakh and determination of its final legal status under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group should be resolved.
“In this situation, the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the armed forces of Azerbaijan from the sovereign territory of Armenia to their initial positions as of May 11 can create the necessary conditions for considering emerging issues within the framework of political and diplomatic tools,” she stressed.
In response to a question about how she assesses the international reaction to the border crisis , Naghdalyan said that Armenia’s international partners, guided by the international law and being sincerely interested in stability and security in the South Caucasus, expressed their unequivocal position that Azerbaijan must immediately and unconditionally withdraw its troops from the sovereign territory of Armenia. -0-
