5 Syrian workers killed in fire at Ankara factory

Five Syrian workers died in a fire that broke out in a factory in the Altındağ district of Ankara on Wednesday, according to a statement from Deputy Turkish Interior Minister Mehmet Ersoy.

Five other workers who were trapped inside the four-story building were rescued by firemen.

The minister said the fire began in the basement of the factory, which manufactures furniture, prompting the workers to flee to the upper floors, but the blaze spread quickly, leading to the death of five Syrian workers.

Three of the deceased have been identified, while work is under way to identify the remaining two.

The cause of the fire, which has been contained, is under investigation.

There are a total of 3,611,834 Syrian immigrants in Turkey who have been granted the temporary protection status, according to a statement from Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu in December 2018.

The number of Syrian refugees in Turkey who fled an ongoing civil war in their country that began in 2011 is higher than in any other country in the world.

Some Syrians in Turkey are reportedly discriminated against and seen as cheap labor by employers.

Moreover, Turkey has a poor record on work safety.  A report on work safety released on Jan. 4 by the Laborers Health and Occupational Safety Assembly (İSİG) revealed that occupational accidents claimed the lives of at least 1,923 workers in Turkey in 2018.
