The Power of the Dog and Dune led the nominations total, while Belfast, West Side Story, and Drive My Car had a strong morning as well.

Though there were numerous surprises in store, several of the most dominant films of awards season had very good mornings when Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan announced the Oscar nominations 2022 on Tuesday morning. Dune and The Power of the Dog, which topped many pre-nominations predictions, led with a huge number of nominations, including best picture. Dune director Denis Villeneuve, however, was left out of the best-director lineup, as Japanese film Drive My Car saw a huge surge of support, landing nominations for best picture, director, and screenplay in addition to the widely expected best-international-feature nomination.
For the actors, there were long-expected front-runners in the mix—Will Smith and Denzel Washington in best actor, Olivia Colman and Kristen Stewart in best actress, Ariana DeBose and Kodi Smit-McPhee in the supporting categories—as well as a number of surprises. Despite earning scant nominations among early awards-voting groups and critics, Jesse Plemons and J.K. Simmons both earned supporting-actor nominations for The Power of the Dog and Being the Ricardos, respectively. And in supporting actress, despite Caitríona Balfe’s widely praised performance as Ma, it was her Belfast costar Judi Dench who was nominated, alongside another surprise contender, The Lost Daughter’s Jessie Buckley.
Below, find a full list of the 2022 Oscar nominations. And for much, much more coverage of these nominations and what they mean, keep checking back to Awards Insider—we’ll be on top of it.
