Adriana Lima had an abrupt about-face on Monday. The Brazilian model, who has donned the angel wings for Victoria’s Secret since 1999 when she was just 18, posted a lengthy manifesto to her Instagram account, denouncing the lingerie giant as “an empty cause” that was “not physically [or] mentally healthy.”
She also unfollowed Victoria’s Secret on Instagram.
Lima, who has 11 million followers on Instagram, and is arguably the most high profile of all the angels, is in many ways the embodiment of the brand. So devoted was she to the cause, she once walked the VS runway just two months after giving birth. If she keeps her word, she stands to lose an enormous amount of money.
But Lima, 36, claims that a comment from a friend about feeling “unhappy with her body” made her examine her own motivations regarding modelling, and the demands the job places on her, and she then decided to turn down a “sexy video” that would have been broadcast over Instagram.
As she writes,
“When a friend approached me to share that she was unhappy with her body, then it made me think…. that everyday in my life, I wake up thinking, how do I look? Was I going to be accepted in my job?
“And in that moment I realised that majority of woman probably wake up every morning trying to fit in a stereotype that society/ social media/ fashion etc imposed…. i thought that’s not a way of living …”
I had received a call for the possibility of filming a sexy video of me to be posted and shared in social media. Even though I have done many of this type, something had changed in me, when a friend approached me to share that she was unhappy with her body, then it made me think…. that everyday in my life, I wake up thinking, how do I look? Was I going to be accepted in my job? And in that moment I realized that majority of woman probably wake up every morning trying to fit in a stereotype that society/socialmedia/fashion etc imposed…. i thought that’s not a way of living and beyond that…. that’s not physically and mentally healthy, so I decided to make that change….. I will not take of my clothes anymore for a empty cause…..#Embraceyouself #natureisbeautiful #naturalissexy #LOVEYOU

Lima, who is, according to Forbes Magazine, the fourth highest paid model in the world, raking in $US10.5 million in last year, went on to say that she could no longer live in a world with such “superficial values” and recognised that change starts with her.
“I will start with me. I refuse to embrace that. I am next to you and I will stand by you” wrote Lima, before signing off with a call to “f–ing change the world.”
