Angelina Jolie is currently the face of Mon Guerlain Eau de Parfum Florale, (rough translation: My posh perfume of flowers), which means that instead of giving the usual interviews about her directing or her oblique references to her separation, we now have the pleasure of reading her thoughts on her face! This is no small thing, given her visage has defined beauty standards for two decades now. Turns out she’s been seeing the same dermatologist since she was 11. Well, prevention is better than cure, and all that.
Jolie sat down for an extremely fancy interview with InStyle Magazine in Paris in order to promote the French fragrance, (spoiler: she loves it because it’s what her mother wore) and talk about how she carves out her “me time”.
She was once a punk. Well, sort of.
“Nowadays it’s very popular to dye your hair blue, for example. In my day you bleached it and used a Sharpie [for color].”
She doesn’t own a lot of make-up, and this meant she let her daughter down.
“I remember [Zahara] had a girlfriend over one night, and they said they were going to do dress-up and did I have any make-up?
“I gave them my make-up, but I wear one colour, red, and I have black eyeliner and mascara – I have the most boring make-up kit. And my daughter and I are different shades of brown. I now have a back-up kit in case anybody wants to play.”
You’ve probably seen her rock the winged eyeliner look. So it’s no surprise she’s a dab hand at it. But what might surprise you is her fondness for concealer. After all, the woman is a single mother to six kids.
“I’m much more comfortable with just a little concealer for my dark circles. That’s my main thing.”
She knows what works on her, too.
“I do either dark eyes or red lips. I have very full, big features, so if I did everything, I’d look a bit like a clown. It’d be just … a lot.”
And while she’s a multi-millionaire, actress, director, special envoy for the UN, activist and the mother of the six kids she shares with her estranged husband Brad Pitt, she still can not for the life of her get a minute alone.
“I’m that person saying, ‘Can you not all be talking to me while I’m in the shower? Can you just not open the door at least? Let me finish and then I’ll get out. Give me a second.”Give me a second’ is the thing. I think most mothers say that all the time. Which now I can’t because my kids kind of go, ‘One. I gave you a second.’”
Jolie defines beauty exactly how you’d expect her to, which is to say she thinks real beauty comes from within. Which, yeah, sure, of course. It’s just that her face is legitimately aspirational and she married the guy called the “sexiest man alive”.
She also loves that she’s ageing. Again: great! It’s just that she has no discernable lines on her 42 year-old face.
But, overall, Jolie appears to handle her beauty like a pro. When asked what it feels like to be thought of as one of the most beautiful women in the world, she replies with just the right amount of candour.
“I look in the mirror and I see that I look like my mother, and that warms me.”
That’s it. Nobody can top that. It’s bittersweet, it’s distinctly not vain, it’s deep, it’s sad, it’s … well, it’s warming.
