YEREVAN, February 5. /ARKA/. Armenia is one of the top 20 fastest growing tourist destinations in the world, according to the latest statistics from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), The Independent reported.
Armenia is ranked 12th, showing a 14.4% tourism industry growth in 2019. Armenia’s overtook its neighbors Turkey and Azerbaijan, which are 13th (14% growth) and 17th (11.4% growth) respectively, while Georgia is not in the top twenty. Armenia’s southern neighbor Iran is significantly ahead of Armenia, ranking third with a 27.9% rise reported for last year.
Top of the pack was Myanmar, which saw a 40.2 per cent per cent increase in visitors, followed by Puerto Rico (31.2 per cent).
According to UNWTO, overseas trips hit 1.5 billion in 2019, up four per cent from 2018, France remained the most-visited country with more than 90 million visitors, followed by Spain’s 83.8 million.
