YEREVAN, February 23. /ARKA/. The Armenian Military Insurance Fund has already paid compensations in the amount of 14 billion drams, its director Varuzhan Avetikyan said at a press conference on Tuesday.
According to the current law, the closest relatives of career army officers, contract servicemen and conscripts who die or become gravely disabled while on combat duty receive 10 million drams ($20,000) one-time payment and wounded soldiers suffering from less serious disabilities receive 5 million drams in compensation.
In addition to these one-off payouts, the families of killed or disabled army officers, contract soldiers and conscripts are eligible to monthly pensions ranging from 100,000 to 300,000 drams for 20 years.
“Since its creation to the present day, the Fund has been serving 1,528 families. In total, we have provided compensations in the amount of 14 billion drams,” Avetikyan said.
He noted that compensation will be provided also to 803 families of the missing servicemen for a period of 6 months, 300 thousand drams monthly.
When a serviceman is already recognized as missing by court, the Fund calculates the payments already made, deducts them from the one-time assistance amount of 10 million drams and transfers the rest to the families. On average, this requires 365 million drams per month, according to Avetikyan.
Among those receiving assistance, he also noted 55 servicemen who were seriously wounded – they were given 17 million drams of assistance, 300 thousand drams a month.
“The number of beneficiaries is growing weekly, including due to the repatriated captives and identified bodies of killed servicemen,”Avetikyan said.
On September 27, 2020, Azerbaijani armed forces, backed by turkey and foreign mercenaries and terrorists, attacked Nagorno-Karabakh along the entire front line using rocket and artillery weapons, heavy armored vehicles, military aircraft and prohibited types of weapons such as cluster bombs and phosphorus weapons.
After 44 days of the war, on November 9, the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a statement on the cessation of all hostilities. According to the document, the parties stopped at where they were at that time. The town of Shushi, the districts of Aghdam, Kelbajar and Lachin were handed over to Azerbaijan, with the exception of a 5-kilometer corridor connecting Karabachos with Armenia.
A Russian peacekeeping contingent was deployed along the contact line in Karabakh and along the Lachin corridor. Internally displaced persons and refugees are returning to Karabakh and adjacent regions, prisoners of war, hostages and other detained persons and bodies of the dead are being exchanged.-
