Bootleg alcohol has killed at least 10 people in five Turkish provinces over the past couple of days.
In the southern province of Kahramanmaraş, people aged between 55 and 71 were hospitalized on Dec. 13 after consuming bootleg alcohol. Despite efforts at the hospital, they lost their lives, while one more died from bootleg alcohol in the Elbistan district of the province.
Bootleg alcohol claimed the lives of two people in the northwestern province of Yalova.
They purchased the materials online to make homemade liquor, security officials said.
Two more people in the province of Sivas, one in Istanbul’s Avcılar district and one in the southern province of Antalya lost their lives due to the consumption of bootleg alcohol.
Security forces across the country have tightened inspections to prevent further fatalities.
Bootleg alcohol is made using low-cost methyl alcohol instead of ethyl alcohol.
