China has banned online encyclopedia Wikipedia, six years after the platform’s founder, Jimmy Wales, refused to comply with China’s regulatory demands regarding the site’s content.
The Chinese Communist Party’s decision to issue a blanket ban on all 300 languages available on Wikipedia’s platform comes a month after Beijing barred the Mandarin version of the community-edited encyclopedia without notifying the Wikimedia Foundation ahead of the ban.
China has also blocked other for-profit platforms like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Pintrest.
