Colombia recognises Palestine as a ‘free, independent’ state

Tel Aviv: The Colombian government has recognised Palestinian statehood, taking the decision during president Juan Manuel Santos’ final week in office.

Santos “decided to recognise Palestine as a free, independent and sovereign state,” according to a Spanish-language letter that was seen by Bloomberg News in Bogota. It was addressed to Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki in the West Bank city of Ramallah and signed by Colombia’s outgoing foreign affairs minister Maria Angela Holguin.

The Santos government told the incoming administration of President Ivan Duque of its decision before leaving office, the new Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Trujillo told reporters. The Duque government would “carefully examine” the implications of the decision and would seek “to maintain a relationship of cooperation with its friends and allies,” Trujillo said.

Malki said in a statement that Santos told him Duque approved of the decision. The document also calls for direct negotiations to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The letter was sent days before Santos left office along with Holguin on August 7, the date on which Duque was sworn in as president.

From left, Ecuador’s President Lenin Moreno, Argentina’s Mauricio Macri, Chile’s Sebastian Pinera and Mexico’sEnrique Pena Nieto hold umbrellas during the presidential inauguration of Ivan Duque, in Bogota, Colombia.

A day before the letter recognising Palestinian statehood was written, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cancelled a planned trip to attend Duque’s inauguration, citing the ongoing military conflict in Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu, who is also foreign minister, waited a full day after the letter’s disclosure before authorising a response. “We are surprised by the news in the media and are waiting to receive explanations from the new administration that is examining the issue,” the Foreign Ministry said in a text message.

Netanyahu has said he supports Palestinian statehood in principle, but only a demilitarised state that would recognise Israel as a Jewish state, a condition Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has rejected. The two sides have been unsuccessfully attempting to reach a peace agreement for the last 25 years.

Colombia becomes the 137th country, out of 193 United Nations memebers to recognise Palestine.
