YEREVAN, March 10. /ARKA/. Consultations with parliament-represented parties on the possibility of holding early parliamentary elections in Armenia continue, Lilit Makunts, head of the ruling My Step bloc, told reporters on Wednesday.
Edmon Marukyan, the leader of the Bright Armenia, one of the two opposition parliament-represented parties, called earlier this month on all political forces of Armenia to join his proposal to resolve the political crisis in the country through early parliamentary elections. According to Marukyan, early elections are the only way out of the current situation in the country.
After a March 4 meeting with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to discuss the holding of snap polls, Marukyan told reporters they failed to reach a consensus on any related issue. Marukyan, in particular, argued that Prime Minister Pashinyan should not press for the resignation of the chief of army’s staff Onik Gasparyan. According to Marukyan, both he and the prime minister have the will to continue these negotiations.
According to Lilit Makunts, the dismissal of Gasparyan and the early elections are not interconnected and therefore should be considered separately.
Pashinyan renewed his election offer on March 1, when addressing a rally in Yerevan he called after the Armenian military’s top brass demanded his resignation, deepening the political crisis in the country.
Bright Armenia accepted the offer; the other party- Prosperous Armenia- which is part of an opposition alliance which has been holding demonstrations in a bid to force Pashinyan to resign has been silent so far. -0-
