European Union chiefs Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen will pay a visit to Turkey next week for an April 6 meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Reuters reported on Monday, citing an EU spokesman.
The visit by the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission arrives as Ankara and Brussels look to relaunch relations following an EU leaders’ meeting last week.
Following a videoconference meeting of the European Council on Thursday, leaders agreed to a “phased, proportionate and reversible” relaunch of their cooperation with Ankara on migration and trade.
The decision arrives amid easing tensions over Turkey’s provocative actions against EU members Cyprus and Greece over the eastern Mediterranean, where a number of countries are vying for the rights to hydrocarbon resources.
The EU officials are expected to discuss new steps to revive EU-Turkey ties, including talks for negotiations on the modernization of the Customs Union and 2016 refugee agreement.
