Worried about fine lines? Minimise premature wrinkles with our expert skincare tips.
By Dr Nina Bal
As we age, it’s inevitable that our skin won’t be as flawless as it once was. Before wrinkles come fine lines, usually in our 30s, and while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with them, there are ways to prevent and reduce fine lines if they are getting you down.
Dr Nina Bal, founder and medical director of Face Sculpting, explains what fine lines are, and how to minimise their appearance:
What are fine lines on the face?
Fine lines are small and shallow lines that appear on the face, this is normally an indicator of first signs of ageing. We tend to find them mostly around the eyes and mouth as these are the areas of the face we tend to move the most with expressions.
Fine lines turn into wrinkles as you age – this is because the collagen and elastin beneath the surface of your skin begins to break down. Wrinkles are normally deeper and in different areas of the face.
What causes fine lines?
Fines lines are caused by the natural breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin combined with ageing and other factors such as sun exposure, smoking, lifestyle and genetics.
How can you prevent fine lines?
You can prevent premature wrinkling by taking care of your skin in the following ways:
✔️ Avoid the sun and make sure you wear SPF every single day – even in the winter! This will protect your skin from UV/UB rays and harsh environmental factors.

✔️ Use medical grade skincare with active ingredients such as retinol and peptides.
✔️ It’s also important to keep on top of a good treatment plan and have regular advanced skin treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing – these types of treatment will improve the skin’s appearance by removing damaged skin so that younger looking, smoother skin can grow in its place.
How can you reduce fine lines?
It’s vital you use medical grade skincare with active ingredients, using retinol twice a week, and peptide based serums will improve the surface and texture of the skin.

Ensure you are also using a daily SPF+ and if you use an active Vitamin C product underneath your SPF you will have a broader protection against the damaging effects of the sun.
