Muharrem İnce, a former lawmaker and presidential candidate for Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), will resign from the party.
İnce said he will form a rival political group with three CHP lawmakers who stepped down last week, Diken news website reported on Sunday. Mehmet Ali Çelebi, Özcan Özel and Hüseyin Aksoy resigned on Friday.
İnce, 56, came second to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in presidential elections held on June 24, 2018. He won 31 percent of the vote compared with Erdoğan’s 53 percent.
He blamed the CHP for mirroring the domestic policies of the government.
“We are seeking a political formation to pave the way for Turkey’s democracy,” he said.
The statutes of the new party are ready and the party programme is almost completed, İnce said.
“We will share them with the public very soon,” he said.
